I've owned two Land Rovers over the last 12 years, and it would be safe to say I'm a fan. They're strong and simple vehicles, and they tend to get you home no matter what you throw at them.
My primary experience is with a 1994 Defender 90 (D90). I bought it used in 1997 with about 12000 miles on it. It was in pristine condition, but that didn't last long.
The second of my Rovers was a 1970 Series IIA 88" Station Wagon. I bought this from Jory Bell in around 1999, and spent 6 years gradually restoring it. When I bought it from Jory it had been hanging (vertically) on his warehouse wall for quite a while, and was a total basket case. I basicaly built it up from scratch. By the time I finished restoring it, I didn't really have room in my world for two Rovers anymore and so in late 2006 I sold it to a nice gentleman from Massachusetts. It was sad to see it go, especially after all that work, but I'm glad it seems to have found a good home.
I've never owned one of the newer Rovers, but I've seen Discoveries and Range Rovers do some pretty amazing things on a trail. Seems like kind of a shame to beat up a $60K car to me, but to each his own...
