A Halloween Favorite... with lots of opportunity for creativity in making the faces.

Required Ingredients

1 ¾CupCake flour
½TeaspoonSoda
½TeaspoonSalt
½CupBakers cocoa
½CupShortening
CupSugar
½CupMilk
Egg
TeaspoonVanilla
BagMarshmallows
Glaze:
½CupBakers cocoa
1 ½CupPowdered sugar
TablespoonHot water
CupMelted butter
Decoration:
TubeOrange Icing (from baking section of most markets in the Fall)

Preparation Instructions

  1. Sift flour, soda, salt and cocoa
  2. Cream sugar and shortening until fluffy. Beat in egg.
  3. To sugar, shortening and egg mixture add flour mixture alternatively with milk, one quarter of each at a time.
  4. Drop by the teaspoonful onto greased cookie sheets and bake for 8 minutes in a preheated 375 degree oven.
  5. While cookies bake cut about 2 dozen marshmallows in half horizontally.
  6. Remove cookies from oven and place one half marshmallow on each cookie, cut side down. Return to oven for an addition 4 minutes of baking. (4 min seems to overcook marshmallows...try 2-3)
  7. Remove marshmallow topped cookies from oven and flatten each one slightly with your hand to make level surface for decorating.
  8. While cookies cool, make the glaze by sifting together the cocoa and powdered sugar and stirring in the hot water and melted butter.
  9. When cookies are cool, glaze. When glaze is cool use a tube of orange decorating icing to make a crazy/spooky halloween face on the top of each cooky. Have fun; be creative!
